Why G9 Bananas Lead the Global Export Market

Ask any container line, port official, or wholesale buyer which banana travels the world best and you'll hear the same answer: Grand Naine — better known in India as G9. Introduced to Indian farms in the 1990s from Central America, G9 has since become the default variety for high-volume export because of one simple reason: it is engineered by nature for transit.

Each finger grows to a predictable 18–22 cm length with a robust, thick peel that resists bruising. Bunches are unusually uniform, meaning packers can achieve 95%+ pack efficiency in standard 13.5 kg cartons — a critical metric when you're shipping thousands of tonnes a month.

Under proper post-harvest handling — pre-cooling to 13°C, ethylene control, and controlled-atmosphere containers — G9 holds colour-stage 1 (fully green) for up to 28 days at sea. That's enough transit time to reach any port in the Middle East, the Netherlands, or the UK with room to spare for ripening at destination.

For buyers, this predictability is priceless. It means retail shelves stay full, ripening rooms hit their marks, and consumer complaints stay low.
